Clarke University issued the following announcement on July 11.
Clarke student Charlotte Rodewald finished her winning streak at the National American Advertising Awards in Hollywood, Florida, in June. Nationals are the final awards ceremony in the competition. Rodewald was awarded a silver award for her piece entitled “Ed’s Chuck Wagon.”
Rodewald’s winning journey began at the Dubuque Chapter of the American Advertising Awards (AAA), where she took home Best of Show in the category of Out of Home Poster for her “Ed’s Chuck Wagon” piece. Rodewald also won both gold and silver awards.
As a result of her gold award at the local level, her work was sent to the Regional competition in St. Louis, Missouri, in March. There she received both gold and silver awards; her gold award was again for her piece “Ed’s Chuck Wagon,” and the silver went to her artwork entitled “Anatomy of Ice Cream.”
Gold and silver winners at the Regional competition are forwarded on to the National AAA competition, which took place in June in Hollywood, Florida.
Rodewald shared, “The experience of being at the National competition in Florida was amazing. It was impactful to mingle with other professionals in the area of art that I’m trying to enter. Seeing the work other artists produce and learning what values they hold and how I can apply that to my own work was invaluable. I share this award with my professors. Not only does it represent everything I’ve learned, but it also displays the high standard examplified in the Clarke Art Department and the University itself.”
Rodewald spoke about the process of creating the poster. “I went through some vintage matchbooks and was also very interested in vintage playing cards. I chose an ‘old wild west’ theme, which isn’t really present in our current culture. I wanted to create a duality between the cowboy and the ox.”
Rodewald will be a senior at Clarke in the fall. She is a graphic design major with minors in English and sculpture, and is also a member of the Scholars Program.
Clarke Professor of Art Louise Kames said, “We celebrate Charlotte’s continued success and are so proud of her. Her accomplishments underscore the professionalism of the graphic design program at Clarke.”
AAF is a national non-profit organization, promoting and protecting the interests of advertising and public relations. Locally, AAF Dubuque is the affiliate to the national organization and AAAward competition. The mission of the competition is to recognize and reward creative excellence in the art of advertising.
